Assistant managers deputise for a manager and run a shift, a section or a branch in their absence, carrying real responsibility for staff and results without final authority. A business diploma or degree with supervisory experience is the usual requirement, and most are promoted internally. Retail chains, banks, restaurants and hotels, and distribution and outsourcing operations all use the grade.
