Data scientists build models that forecast, score or classify - credit risk, churn, demand - and are usually responsible for proving the model is worth trusting before anyone acts on it. Most regional postings ask for a quantitative degree, often a master's, along with Python or R and production experience. The employers are concentrated in banking, insurance and telecoms, with some demand from outsourcing firms delivering analytics for overseas clients.
