Network engineers design, build and troubleshoot the switching, routing, wireless and security layers an organisation runs over, and carry responsibility for uptime across sites. Employers commonly ask for a computing qualification and Cisco certification, with hands-on experience weighted heavily. Telecoms carriers, internet providers, banks, utilities and large government departments are the principal regional employers.
