Caribbean Salaries

Real salaries reported by people across the region.

Did you know? Barbados

Three things about the place behind the numbers.

A republic since 2021

Barbados removed the British monarch as head of state in November 2021 and swore in its own president, having been independent since 1966. It stayed in the Commonwealth and kept its parliament, which is among the oldest continuously sitting legislatures in the world.

Coral, not volcano

Most of the Eastern Caribbean is volcanic and mountainous. Barbados is not: it is a cap of coral limestone pushed up out of the sea, which is why it is comparatively flat and why rain sinks straight through it rather than running off. The island has long drawn its drinking water from underground, filtered by the rock on the way down.

Two dollars to one

The Barbados dollar has been fixed at two to the United States dollar since 1975 and has not moved since. For anyone comparing pay that makes a Barbadian salary unusually easy to read across: halve it and you have the US figure, this year and last.
