Three things about the place behind the numbers.

Two Nobel laureates

Arthur Lewis won the Nobel in economics in 1979 and Derek Walcott won it for literature in 1992, both born on an island of under two hundred thousand people. That is the highest number of laureates per head of any country, a statistic Saint Lucia has every right to keep repeating.

You can drive into a volcano

The Pitons, two volcanic spires rising straight out of the sea at Soufriere, are the national symbol and a World Heritage site. Nearby, the Sulphur Springs let vehicles right up to the steaming vents of a collapsed crater, and the place is marketed, accurately enough, as a drive-in volcano.

British island, French everything else

Control of Saint Lucia passed between Britain and France so often that the count usually given locally is fourteen times. The official language ended up English, while the place names, the food and Kweyol, the creole most people speak at home, all came from the other side.
