United States, but its own tax system

Puerto Ricans are United States citizens and the island uses the US dollar and the federal minimum wage. Income earned on the island is generally outside federal income tax but inside Puerto Rico's own, which is why a salary here does not compare cleanly with the same job on the mainland.

The medicine cabinet

Pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing has been a mainstay since tax incentives drew the industry in from the 1970s onwards. It still accounts for a large share of exports and supports a technical workforce in chemistry, quality and regulatory roles that is unusual for an island this size.

The only tropical rainforest in the system

El Yunque is the single tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System, covering the mountains at the northeast end of the island. It is also home to the coqui, the small frog whose two-note call runs all night and which appears on more local merchandise than any other animal.
