What are the Software Developer Salaries in Jamaica?

  • software developer
  • it
  • jamaica

What do developers actually earn in Jamaica? I reviewed 156 tech salary figures, from a JMD $960,000 intern to a JMD $10,794,000 consultant. The ladder is real, but the biggest jump on it is not the one you think. One bank cut 14 IT posts while paying some of the best salaries.

"Learn to code" is the most repeated career advice in Jamaica and the least specific. Nobody ever finishes the sentence. Learn to code and earn what? Learn to code and go where? Which company? After how many years? We have several local organisations geared towards learning to code locally, but few can answer how much 'X role' at 'Y company' earns.

I have 156 tech salary figures for Jamaica now, out of 498 reports in total, and that is enough to finish the sentence. This article is the ladder: what an intern earns, what a junior earns, what a senior earns, what the very top of the local market looks like, and where on that ladder the money actually jumps.

The short version: the median Jamaican salary across all our reports is JMD $2,640,000. A Software Developer earns JMD $2,721,996, which is almost exactly the national median馃檭. A Software Engineer earns JMD $4,300,000. And a Data Engineer at Intellibus earns JMD $10,794,000, roughly USD $68,300. Same industry, same island, four times the money.

Note well: All salaries here are annual, in Jamaican dollars unless stated. This article was written on our data as at September 22, 2026, and US dollar conversions use the rate cached that day, about JMD $158 to USD $1.

What Does A Developer Actually Earn In Jamaica?

Here is the ladder, by median, with the number of reports behind each rung. Read the report counts. A rung with one report is one person, not a market rate.

- Software Development Intern - JMD $1,080,000 (1 report)

- Software Developer Intern - JMD $1,200,000 (2 reports, $960,000 to $1,440,000)

- Junior Software Engineer - JMD $1,200,000 (1 report)

- Junior Programmer - JMD $1,356,000 (1 report)

- Web Developer - JMD $2,300,000 (3 reports, $2,196,000 to $4,300,000)

- Software Developer - JMD $2,721,996 (14 reports, $1,680,000 to $3,600,000)

- Programmer Analyst - JMD $2,892,000 (8 reports, $2,256,000 to $4,300,000)

- Junior Software Developer - JMD $3,180,000 (4 reports, $3,000,000 to $3,360,000)

- Junior Developer - JMD $3,240,000 (3 reports, $2,400,000 to $3,240,000)

- Programmer - JMD $3,675,000 (8 reports, $960,000 to $6,050,000)

- Mid-Level Developer - JMD $3,960,000 (1 report)

- Software Engineer - JMD $4,300,000 (22 reports, $1,020,000 to $9,050,000)

- Senior Developer - JMD $5,520,000 (3 reports, $4,680,000 to $5,520,000)

- Front End Developer, Level 5 - JMD $6,000,000 (2 reports)

- Frontend Developer - JMD $6,050,000 (1 report)

- Senior Software Developer - JMD $7,200,000 (1 report)

- ReactJS Developer - JMD $10,794,000 (1 report)

- Data Engineer - JMD $10,897,000 (2 reports, $10,794,000 to $11,000,000)

Now read it twice, because there is something uncomfortable in it.

A Junior Software Developer earns more than a Software Developer. JMD $3,180,000 against JMD $2,721,996. A Junior Developer earns more still, at JMD $3,240,000.

That is not an error in the data. It is a title problem, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

"Junior" only exists where there is something to be junior to. A company writes "Junior Software Developer" on a contract when it has a ladder: a junior grade, a mid grade, a senior grade, and a salary band attached to each. Companies with ladders are banks, telecoms, and established software houses, and those companies pay. Plain "Software Developer" is what a small shop calls everybody it employs, on day one and in year six, and the title never changes because there is nothing for it to change into.

The same logic shows up at the other end. "Front End Developer, Level 5" pays JMD $6,000,000. The level in the title is doing real work there. It tells you somebody sat down and graded the role.

Where Is The Biggest Jump On The Ladder?

Not where people think.

The jump from intern to junior is about JMD $2,000,000, which sounds enormous and is really just the difference between a stipend and a salary. The jump from junior to senior is about JMD $2,300,000 over several years.

The jump that matters is Software Developer to Software Engineer: JMD $2,721,996 to JMD $4,300,000. That is JMD $1,578,004, about 58 percent, and in a great many cases it is the same person doing the same work under a different title.

I am not telling you to lie on your CV/Resume. I am telling you that in this data, across 14 reports on one title and 22 on the other, the word "Engineer" is worth more than a mid-level promotion, and it costs nothing to ask for it when you take an offer.

Note Well: Software Engineer also has the widest spread on the whole ladder, JMD $1,020,000 to JMD $9,050,000. Nine times, same title, same island. The title gets you into a better room. It does not tell you where in the room you are standing.

## Which Employers Pay Developers The Most In Jamaica?

Median across every tech titled role at each employer, for employers with two or more:

- Intellibus - JMD $10,794,000 (2 reports)

- Lucidworks - JMD $9,050,000 (2 reports)

- Innovate 10X - JMD $6,050,000 (2 reports)

- TFOB (2021) - JMD $6,000,000 (2 reports)

- CIBC Caribbean - JMD $5,750,000 (4 reports)

- Jamaica Public Services - JMD $5,640,000 (2 reports)

- Jamaica Money Market Brokers - JMD $4,300,000 (5 reports)

- Sagicor - JMD $4,300,000 (5 reports)

- GridDynamics Jamaica - JMD $3,950,000 (2 reports)

- Government of Jamaica - JMD $3,675,000 (6 reports)

- NCB - JMD $3,650,000 (18 reports)

- GraceKennedy - JMD $3,600,000 (7 reports)

- Norus Tech - JMD $3,600,000 (4 reports)

- MC Systems - JMD $3,375,000 (4 reports)

- JN Bank - JMD $3,360,000 (4 reports)

- Digicel Group - JMD $3,073,000 (16 reports)

- Information, Communications & Technology Authority - JMD $2,441,436 (11 reports)

Three things in that list.

The top of it is foreign. Intellibus, Lucidworks, and GridDynamics are overseas companies that chose to employ people in Jamaica. Intellibus pays in US dollars. You can live in Jamaica and be paid at something close to a foreign rate, and the evidence for that is at the top of this table rather than in anybody's LinkedIn post.

The middle of it is banks and telecoms, and that is where the volume is. NCB has 18 tech reports, Digicel 16, ICTA 11, GraceKennedy 7. These are the employers most Jamaican developers actually work for, and they cluster between JMD $3,000,000 and JMD $4,300,000.

The spread inside one employer is enormous. NCB's tech reports run from JMD $1,800,000 to JMD $10,000,000. GraceKennedy's run from JMD $625,000 to JMD $6,050,000. Asking "what does NCB pay" is not a question with an answer. Asking "what does NCB pay a Database Administrator?" is.

The Thing That Happened At NCB

Since NCB is the largest tech employer in this data, it is worth saying plainly what has been happening there.

NCB has been running an efficiency programme, and IT has been part of it. Our own layoff records include October 2023 redundancies, corroborated by Jamaica Gleaner reporting on NCB IT redundancies and JMD $12 billion in separation costs booked in FY2023, and then 14 IT posts made redundant in February 2024, again reported by the Gleaner. There is a further round in our records for the first quarter of 2026.

Hold that beside the salary table. NCB pays a tech median of JMD $3,650,000 and holds individual tech salaries up to JMD $10,000,000, and it has been cutting IT posts through the same period. Both of those things are true at once, and they are probably the same fact: an efficiency programme that removes the cheaper half of a department raises the median of what is left.

It is also worth knowing that the pressure is not only in banking. Conduent cut approximately 200 roles in Jamaica in June 2025, which our records file under BPO sector contraction. BPO is the industry that most Jamaican tech workers came out of or nearly went into.

*This is the part of the article I most want to expand. If you were affected by a restructuring at a Jamaican tech employer, you can report it anonymously, and it helps everybody coming after you.

How Does Tech Compare To The Rest Of Jamaica?

- Information Technology sector median: JMD $3,050,000 (68 reports)

- All Jamaica, every sector: JMD $2,640,000 (498 reports)

- IT 25th percentile: JMD $1,800,000

- IT 75th percentile: JMD $4,300,000

So the IT sector pays about 16 percent above the national median. That is a real premium, and it is smaller than the internet would have you believe. The premium is not in the average tech job. It is in the top quarter of tech jobs, where the 75th percentile sits at JMD $4,300,000 against a national median of JMD $2,640,000.

And for the record, tech is not the highest paying sector in Jamaica. Government & Public Administration is, at JMD $3,999,996 across 141 reports, because of the Public Sector Compensation Restructuring. I wrote about that in What are the highest paying jobs in Jamaica, and it is still the most surprising line in this whole database.

What About Everything Else In Tech?

Developers are not the only people in the building. From our data:

- Data Engineer - JMD $10,897,000 (2 reports)

- Java Consultant - JMD $10,794,000 (1 report)

- DevOps Engineer - JMD $6,675,000 (2 reports, $4,300,000 to $9,050,000)

- Security Engineer - JMD $6,150,000 (2 reports, $2,300,000 to $10,000,000)

- Data Scientist - JMD $6,050,000 (1 report)

- BI Reporting Developer - JMD $6,050,000 (1 report)

- Database Administrator - JMD $5,640,000 (4 reports, $3,050,000 to $10,000,000)

- UI/UX Designer - JMD $4,550,000 (4 reports, $2,300,000 to $6,050,000)

- Cybersecurity Analyst - JMD $4,300,000 (3 reports)

- QA Engineer - JMD $4,300,000 (5 reports, $4,300,000 to $9,050,000)

- System Administrator - JMD $2,425,000 (4 reports, $1,800,000 to $4,300,000)

- IT Support Specialist - JMD $3,675,000 (2 reports)

- IT Helpdesk Technician - JMD $1,800,000 (1 report)

- IT Specialist - JMD $1,440,000 (2 reports)

Data Engineering is the best paid thing in Jamaican tech in this data, and it is not close. QA Engineer at JMD $4,300,000 out-earning Software Developer at JMD $2,721,996 is the other one people will argue with, and it is the "Junior" lesson again: QA Engineer is a graded title at serious companies, and 5 of the 5 reports come from exactly that kind of employer.

The bottom of the list is where the word "IT" appears on its own. IT Specialist at JMD $1,440,000 and IT Helpdesk Technician at JMD $1,800,000. Same industry as the Data Engineer on JMD $10,897,000, seven times apart.

What Should You Actually Do With This?

1. Ask for "Engineer" in the title. Software Developer to Software Engineer is JMD $1,578,004 in this data, roughly 58 percent, and it is a word.

2. Prefer an employer that grades its roles. Junior, Mid, Senior, Level 5. Every graded title on this ladder out-earns the ungraded one below it. A company that grades roles has thought about how you get a raise.

3. Look at data before you look at the front end. Data Engineer JMD $10,897,000, Data Scientist JMD $6,050,000, Database Administrator JMD $5,640,000. The three best paid specialisms in Jamaican tech all sit around data.

4. Consider a foreign employer hiring locally. The top four employers in this table are overseas companies with Jamaican staff, and Intellibus pays in US dollars. Being in Jamaica is not the thing capping the salary.

5. Do not let "IT" be your job title. IT Specialist at JMD $1,440,000. Data Engineer at JMD $10,897,000. Both are "IT".

How I Calculated These Figures?

Every number here comes out of the CaribSalaries database and nowhere else.

- 498 approved Jamaican dollar reports for Jamaica, across 310 job titles and 179 employers, all quoted as annual salaries. 156 of them carry a technology job title, which is what this article is about.

- Four kinds of source sit behind them: advertised salaries from 2026 job postings, a developer community salary survey where people picked a bracket rather than typing a figure, individual reports from workers, and the published statutory parliamentary scale, which is not tech and is excluded from every figure in this article.

- 94 of the 498 arrived as a band. Where somebody picked a bracket, I store the midpoint and the site says "reported as a salary band" beside it. Where a posting gave a range, I store the bottom, because that is a number somebody is definitely paid.

- Where a title has more than one report, I quote the median and print the count. Where it has one, I say so and quote the single figure rather than invent a range around it.

- The employer table groups every technology titled role at that employer, so "NCB, 18 reports" means 18 tech reports, not 18 reports in total.

- Several figures sit at the top of a survey bracket, which means the true number could be higher, not lower. When somebody ticks "JMD $12,000,000 and above," there is no ceiling in the answer.

- The Intellibus figures are the midpoint of a reported JMD $800,000 to $999,000 a month, which annualises to JMD $9,600,000 to $11,988,000. Intellibus staff are paid in US dollars.

- The layoff records are community submitted and moderated, and the NCB entries are corroborated by published Jamaica Gleaner reporting, which is named in the record.

- US dollar figures convert at the rate cached the day I wrote this, about JMD $158 to USD $1.

I do not estimate, model, or fill gaps. If a title is not on this page, nobody has reported it yet.
